The British Crystallographic Association (BCA) was founded in 1982 to advance the education of the public in the science of crystallography, particularly within the British Isles. We have a sizeable number of non-UK members and are already planning the next Congress of the International Union of Crystallography, to be held in Glasgow in 1999

Four subgroups cater for specialist minority interests, in 1996 these are

• Biological Structures Group
• Chemical Crystallography Group
• Industrial Group
• Physical Crystallography Group

Other groups may be formed as members' interests change.

The BCA achieves its objectives by:

• carrying out research and publishing results
• organising conferences and meetings
• publishing a quarterly Newsletter
• any other appropriate means

NRPB

The National Radiological Protection Board was created by the Radiological Protection Act 1970.

The statutory functions of NRPB under the Act are

• by means of research and otherwise, to advance the acquisition of knowledge about the protection of mankind from radiation hazards
• to provide information and advice to persons (including Government Departments) with responsibilities in the United Kingdom in relation to the protection from radiation hazards either of the community as a whole or of particular sections of the community.

NRPB was also given the power

• to provide technical services to persons concerned with radiation hazards
• to make charges for such services, and for providing information and advice

Silicon Valley X-ray Site

The Silicon Valley X-ray Site is created with the purpose of providing links and information related primarily to X-ray instrumentation and applications of X-rays to material studies. It will host several home pages for producers of X-ray instrumentation as well. Hosting for other producers of scientific instrumentation, not necessarily X-ray, is welcome. The products of firms specialized in electronics, software, optics, etc., are usually highly interesting for researchers busy in material science.

XRD Discussion List

This discussion list is intended to cover all aspects of the implementation, support and use of X-ray diffraction instrumentation. This includes software for instrument control and for processing of data produced from these instruments. Materials scientists, earth scientists, physicists, chemists, and biological crystallographers all use X-ray diffraction. It is the hope that this list will provide an forum for crystallographers and mineralogists using XRD, whatever branch of science they work in, to both share their experiences and to learn from others.
